A sanctuary for the still image.
We live during a time when photographs have largely become fleeting artefacts of light and code. Born in a digital instant, polished swiftly by sterile algorithms, and cast into a vast, virtual silence, they are released into virtual space in their millions, to be scrolled by with nary a thought by individuals who consume an abundance of similar imagery every single day.
Medium format analogue photography in many ways represents the opposite way of creating imagery. It is slow, fussy and expensive. And yet, many of us who practise it revel in the process and pleasure of it. It is an approach to photography that demands patience, focus, and sense of purpose and ultimately produces imagery that, at least to my mind, has a depth and vitality that is just wonderful and singular.
Being an analogue photographer in this constantly shifting virtual landscape has required many an adjustment. I have in the past, like most everybody else, fed the most popular platforms much of my work and found it a soulless task. Any illusions of shared joy and community building tend to be replaced by the realisation that our images are nothing but fodder for the huge behemoths to sell advertising and data. To add to this incongruence, anyone sharing imagery that features nudity online will quickly find out that a blend of commercial interests and puritanical tendencies have made nudes very unwelcome on all the major platforms.
All of the above has led me to the realisation that rather than trying to share my images with the masses, I prefer to share them with the few that value photography, and this kind of photography in particular, to such a degree that they may choose to support its creation. Patreon has created a platform that makes that possible in a rather beautiful way, and I have since made it the hub for all my photographic explorations.
